Message from the Executive Director

I would like to welcome you to the 2014 edition of the East African Business Directory. The publication of the Directory is in line with one of our objectives of increasing access to information on business opportunities in the East African Community (EAC).

This edition comes at a time when the Common Market information for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the EAC, and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) are at advanced stages to establish a Free Trade Area (FTA).

In this issue, we have included a special feature on the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite FTA because we believe that the business community should begin preparing itself to tap into the immense opportunities.

One of the challenges facing the private sector in the three Regional Economic Communities (RECs)-COMESA, EAC, SADC-is lack of access to vital information to enable them make informed decisions on trade and investment. This in turn hampers intra-regional trade.

Therefore, this directory is one of our strategies in ensuring that information on business contacts in region is readily accessible and that the business community can use it build synergies with similar businesses in neighbouring trading blocs.

As the trading expands beyond the confines of EAC, access to information will be critical in enabling the private sector to build synergies and tap into the business and investment opportunities in SADC and other COMESA countries.

The Directory is distributed through private sector apex bodies in each of the EAC five EAC countries. These in turn distribute the Directory to their membership, reaching more than 100,000 businesses in the region.

The past editions have been widely circulated in the EAC and the directory has become recognized as the premium annual business publication for anyone looking for investment and trade opportunities in the EAC region. The circulation continues to appeal to the wider business community outside the EAC. Building on the current goodwill and momentum surrounding the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite FTA, we believe that this directory will continue to offer you useful information to enable your businesses take advantage of the larger FTA.

I would like to thank those who have continuously contributed towards making this directory a premium business publication the EAC and beyond. We look forward to receiving constant feedback from you on how we can make the EABD even a bigger success not just in the EAC but in COMESA and SADC, as well.

Andew Luzze
Executive Director,
